Australia is leading the world in ageing research

Australia is leading the world in ageing research.

“We have consolidated our position as a globally leading centre in population research,” says CEPAR Director Professor John Piggott.

The 2016 Annual Report from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR) details CEPAR’s activities, outputs and events in the calendar year 2016.

“One satisfying development in 2016, evidence to support the view that CEPAR has come of age, is that two highly relevant and timely edited volumes were published, both edited by CEPAR personnel.”

“The first focuses on the Economics of Population Ageing and covers a diverse range of topics drawn from many fields within the discipline. The second volume focuses on Australian issues and is co-edited by a sociologist, a demographer, and an economist.”

CEPAR has also established a major international network of global pension researchers after joining forces with Tilburg University in the Netherlands and the Pension Research Council at the University of Pennsylvania. The International Network for Pensions, Ageing, and Retirement Research (INPARR) was launched at an inaugural conference hosted by the OECD in Paris.

Other highlights of 2016 include:

  • 138 journal publications
  • 59 research projects
  • A$27.25 million ARC funds awarded for a second seven-year term
  • RoundTable on longitudinal survey for older cohorts in Canberra
  • Launch of the Regional Australia Database for Ageing Research (RADAR)
  • Mid-life employment workshop held in Sydney
  • 15th National Emerging Researchers in Ageing Conference in Canberra
  • Advanced training workshop on computational economics held in Sydney
  • Chief Investigator Robert Cumming listed as a highly-cited researcher on the 2016 Clarivate Analytics Report
  • Chief Investigator Kaarin Anstey and team launched NHMRC Centre of Excellence in Cognitive Health.

CEPAR is a unique, independent, ARC-funded research centre bringing together academia, government and industry to address one of the major social challenges of the 21st century. It is based at University of New South Wales, with nodes at the Australian National University, the University of Melbourne and the University of Sydney.
