Retrenchment can be one of life’s more stressful events and the question ‘where to next?’ can be difficult to answer. For Belle Property real estate agent Amy Wilson, the answer came when she was selling her house.
Amy’s life took a new direction after she was retrenched from her role as a graphic designer with the CSIRO.
“I was pregnant with my fourth child when I was made redundant,” she recalls. “Six months later, we were selling our house and the agent who sold it told me that he thought I would be good in real estate and offered me a job.
“Once I got a taste of working in real estate, I realised he was right. I was good at it and I loved it.”
Reflecting on her years in her previous job, Amy says the creativity in her role had been eroded and she was ready for the change.
“My job had become a full-time desk job, sitting at a computer. That wasn’t me. I wanted to be more inspired and out in the world with people. Changing careers to real estate was challenging but rewarding. It was exciting to enter a new industry, meet new people and master something new.”
Amy’s parents both grew up in O’Connor. As a third-generation Canberran, she has a passion for mid-century Canberra design and architecture.
“The designer in me loves the textures, finishes and the ideas of those truly special architect-designed Canberra homes built in the 1960s and 1970s. I appreciate their aesthetics, the brick and timber they used, the exposed beams and floor-to-ceiling windows,” she explains.
Amy has had a lifelong interest in property and bought her first home at age 18.
“My parents had investment properties. I have always loved looking through the listings and visiting open homes. So it was a natural move for me really,” she says.
Now with three years in real estate, Amy’s passion for the industry has only grown.
“I focus on making the process of buying or selling a home a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. It is my job to be the person in the middle and eliminate any friction.”
Amy’s background as a graphic designer, photographer and artist is put to work when helping vendors prepare their homes for sale.
“I walk through the home with the client and give them advice. If they can’t afford to move out and professionally style the property, I will help them prepare the house with my stock of artworks and decorator items,” she explains. “I often take a carload of stuff to a home prior to a shoot.
“It does make a difference. A beautifully presented home gives vendors the confidence that they are doing everything they can to get a good result. Buyers definitely pay more for a home that they have fallen in love with.”
Amy looks after Cook and Aranda for Belle Property like a local because she is one.
“To be a good agent you have to totally believe in what you are selling. I live in the area, my kids are in the local schools, I understand what people are looking for because they are often families just like mine.
“I see my job as matching buyers with homes, not just churning numbers through an open home waiting for someone to make an offer. Buyers appreciate being looked after, not ignored. Personally, I find it very rewarding work when I walk away from a sale feeling awesome because both the buyers and the sellers are happy and feel like they have won.”
