You don’t need to climb Everest to get into shape!

What’s the reason we go to work? What’s the reason we eat? What’sthe reason we exercise?

Firstly, we go to work because in this urbanised society a secure jobthat provides for our basic needs presents us and those around us agreater chance live a full and enriched life.

Secondly, eating is a necessity of life. We eat to satisfy our physicalselfso we are able to do the things we need to do each and everyday. Thanks to advertising and marketing, competition within thefood industry has increased and consequently, many food items haveincreased in simple carbohydrates and salts, causing healthy eating tobecome a noticeable industry.

Thirdly, we exercise to keep in shape and lower the chance of heartdisease and diabetes. Like eating, urbanisation promotes sedentarylifestyles and walking to the corner shop is nearing non-existent. Yetagain, this issue is not in our societies favour and as a public healthadvocator it is my job to do something about it.

If we ask ourselves ‘what’s the reason we go to work?’ we can listhundred’s of reason right here and now, these reasons or ‘motivators’push us to achieve work-related goals on a day-to-day basis.

So, wouldn’t it make sense to increase ‘motivators’ to improve eatinghealthy and exercise? As a health coach I take pride in regular exerciseand a balance diet however, I find this practice automatic when I havea reason for doing it. On the 19th of February this year I set out to do a12-day charity trek to the historic Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal.

What I found was six-months before the trek I started to run up localhills, attend the gym most days of the week and I’d walk to places mostof us would normally drive to. My eating was more structured and Iconsciously consider the healthier option on most occasions.

Although, this was a pretty extreme reason to start getting into shape, aspiring to achieve exercise-related events such as a local fun runwill help you get into shape, whilst making easier to achieve workplace goals.

You don’t need to climb to the base of the highest mountain in theworld to get into shape. Any health-related event will get you climbingto personal health goals.
